Rusal Guinea bauxite workers end strike, get pay raise

Striking employees at Russian aluminum giant Rusal’s Guinean subsidiary Compagnie des Bauxites de Dian-Dian (COBAD) returned to work on June 2, a union leader said Monday, a week after their protest action began.

COBAD workers went on strike on May 26 to demand higher wages and conditions.

“We have a 5 percent increase in basic wages, housing allowances and medical coverage,” union leader Yamoussabangura told Reuters.

Rusal did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Guinea is the world’s second largest producer of bauxite, an ore used to make aluminum, and a major supplier of bauxite to China. Statistics from Guinea’s Ministry of Mines show that it produced 83 million tons of bauxite in 2021.

Last year COBAD produced 3.59 million tons of bauxite, while Rusal’s other operations in Guinea, Compagnie des Bauxites de Kindia, produced 2.65 million tons, according to the Ministry of Mines.
