Austria will charge a deposit on plastic bottles and aluminum cans

In order to promote environmental protection, Austria from 2025 will be on the market for plastic bottles and aluminum cans of beverages to charge a deposit of 0.25 euros each, consumers can return the beverage bottles to collect the deposit.

The European “local” news website on the 13th quoted Austrian Environment Minister Leonore Gwessler: “Austria is establishing a deposit system. In this way, we protect nature and ensure that plastic bottles and aluminum cans are properly recycled.”

According to the relevant regulations, the deposit applies to plastic bottles and aluminum cans with a capacity of between 100 ml and 3 liters. The deposit is required for the purchase of the item in question and can be returned to any seller who sells the item in question.

However, for sanitary reasons, plastic bottles and aluminum cans containing dairy products and milk-containing beverages are not covered by the deposit system.

According to local media, Austria produces more than 56,000 tons of plastic bottles and aluminum cans each year, of which about 15,000 tons never make it to the recycling bin.

According to Gwessler, the deposit system is quite “practical” and “easy for everyone to participate” and will “ensure that bottles become bottles again and cans become cans.
