U.S. media: U.S. aluminum can shortage to brewers “unexpected trouble”

The U.S. “Los Angeles Times” website reported on the 12th, the U.S. nationwide shortage of aluminum cans supply to brewers brought unexpected trouble, pushing up the price drinkers have to pay.

California’s aging recycling system reportedly doesn’t collect enough aluminum cans, which can contain up to 73 percent of material from recycling scrap, and data from the California Department of Resources Recycling and Reuse show that over five years, California’s aluminum can recycling rate has dropped 20 percent, from 91 percent in 2016 to 73 percent in 2021. In 2016, more than 766 million aluminum cans ended up in landfills and were not recycled, according to the state. Last year, that number was 2.8 billion, enough to fill about 31,000 backyard swimming pools.

Without a steady supply of aluminum cans, the beer industry could come to a standstill and leave small businesses vulnerable, experts say.

In the event of a supply shortage, Colorado-based Bloomfield, CO-based Bauer, one of the big U.S. aluminum can makers, said last fall that it would no longer handle small or even medium-sized orders, the report said.
