Nobelis eyes U.S. recycling legislation to increase aluminum scrap supply

Nobelis, one of the world’s largest producers of rolled aluminum, plans to lobby for more recycling legislation in the U.S. to increase the supply of scrap metal.

The company is one of three to announce new rolling mills in the U.S. this year, setting the stage for increased competition for scrap aluminum.

In May, the company built a new plant in Alabama, but the profitability of such an investment will depend on a healthy supply of aluminum scrap from a country that has long lagged behind Europe in recycling rates

The call to action echoes the Virginia-based Aluminum Association, which announced earlier this year that it would be more tenacious in seeking recycling legislation at the state level.

Only 10 U.S. states have beverage can recycling depository programs, in which the government pays customers a unit price for recycling used beverage cans.

These programs provide aluminum rolling mills with a steady source of recyclable raw materials.
