Mozal aluminum smelter shut down due to accident

South32, which owns the Mozal aluminum smelter, has suspended production of the accidental electrolytic aluminum series, involving a capacity of around 250,000 tons, following an accident at the plant that killed two employees and seriously injured a contractor on Nov. 7.

According to the company, the accident occurred on Nov. 7, which is very rare in the aluminum smelting industry. Meanwhile, the company said that the injured contractor is receiving treatment, but did not provide more details on the nature of the accident.

The group said on Nov. 8: “Electrolysis production at the Mozal aluminum smelter’s A-series has been suspended and an investigation into the accident is underway.” The company added: “We will share lessons learned at South32 to prevent similar incidents from happening again in the future.”

According to Global Aluminum News, Mozal aluminum smelter is located 20 kilometers west of Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, and was officially commissioned in September 2000 with an initial original capacity of 250,000 tons per year, which was expanded in 2003-2004, and now it is the largest aluminum producer in Mozambique and the second largest in Africa with a total annual capacity of about 580,000 tons of primary aluminum. It is responsible for 30% of the country’s official exports and uses 45% of the electricity produced in Mozambique.

South32 owns 63.7% of the Mozal aluminum smelter, with the remaining shares owned by Mitsubishi, the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa Ltd. and the Government of the Republic of Mozambique (through preferred shares).
